- Alopecia Areata - is an autoimmune disease where white blood cells from the immune system attack hair follicles and stop them from producing
hair. Autoimmune disease happens when a patient's immune system mistakenly thinks that part of his or her own tissue is diseased. The tissue is
then attacked. The most common symptom of alopecia areata are the patches of hair loss on the head, with smooth, hairless scalp in the affected
areas. Alopecia totalis involves the complete loss of all scalp hair, and Alopecia universalis is characterized by the complete loss of all scalp
and body hair.
Tip! There can be a genetic predisposition for hair loss to occur.
Alopecia Areata is a unpredictable and disturbing disorder that affects approximately 1.7 percent of the
population overall, including more than 5 million people in the United States alone. Though not deadly, this disease often causes more emotional
distress than physical because of the embarrassment of hair loss.
Although there is no cure for this disease, there are treatments that may help the hair to regrow. It is very
important to understand, the treatments available are meant to help regrow hair where it has fallen out and do not prevent hair loss.
Tip! It is a myth women who blow dry their hair have a higher chance to suffer form
thinning hair or massive hair loss.
Oral Minoxidil, originally used to treat high blood pressure was found to stimulate hair growth. Since this
discovery, a topical Minoxidil (Rogaine) has been developed to help with hair growth. There a many medications that are intended to treat other
medical disorders but seem to stimulate some hair growth, but Minoxidil is the first FDA approved medication developed for hair regrowth. Applied
twice daily, it is typical to see results in as little as 12weeks. Minoxidil does not stop the disease process so stopping applications after
hair has started to grow back may cause the hair to fall out again.
